The Veya Saxophone Quartet are Mark White (Soprano), Fiona Asbury (Alto), Jim Fieldhouse (Tenor) and Simon Murray (Baritone), who are all graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music, where the group was formed in 2000. Recitals include performances at the Purcell Room as Winners of the Park Lane Group Competition, the 2004 BBC Proms (a performance which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3), St Martin-in-the-Fields, Leeds International Chamber Music Series (named as one of The Times newspaper's Top 5‚ concerts of the week), the RNCM as appointed Young Artists‚ in 2004, and other recitals around the North West of England, including Whitworth and Ladylever Art Galleries, Rosehill Theatre, Heaton Hall and Mancheste's Town Hall and Urbis Centre. They have also performed at the Jersey, Warwick, Rotherham, Chorlton, Barton-On-Humber, Peterborough, Stratford-upon-Avon and Pennine Spring Music Festivals. |
In 2006 the quartet gave recitals at Music Clubs throughout Scotland as winners of the Tunnell Trust Award. This was then followed by a tour of New York and Boston, funded by the Hattori Foundation. As guest soloists, the quartet has performed with Manchester University Wind Orchestra and Birmingham Symphonic Winds. They were also featured in the National Concert Band Festival. In 2005 the quartet gave the European Premiere of Nicolas Flagello's Saxophone Quartet Concerto‚ with the Derby Concert Orchestra and London's Orchestra of the City (a performance which was named by The Times newspaper as their concert of the day). The quartet has also premiered Barry Russell's Fanfare for St. Anne's‚ with the BBC Philharmonic Brass section. Since 2003 the quartet has been part of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now!‚ Scheme, which has seen them extensively travel the UK, presenting workshops and concerts to a wide variety of audiences. The quartet has provided entertainment for many weddings, corporate events and street festivals. They have given concerts for Orient Express Trains, the Duchess of Kent and the Royal Navy. |
Their debut CD, Homemade Six British Composers‚ is now available and features works by Fitkin, Jackson, Casken and Russell, as well as compositions by quartet members Mark White and Simon Murray.
